Projects & Funding
Projects in the Kaweah Subbasin must provide groundwater benefits by transitioning irrigated agricultural land to less water-intensive use(s) and create additional benefits for rural communities, economies, and/or ecosystems. Projects must align with the broader MLRP Program goals as well as with regional land repurposing strategies and Groundwater Sustainability Plans in the Kaweah Subbasin. Projects must provide a public benefit for at least ten years after the project is implemented.
Development Project Solicitation Reopened
A project solicitation for Development Funding was open from March 14, 2025 to August 31, 2025, and reopened on April 24, 2026. The Kaweah MLRP reopened the solicitation to enroll more projects with clear groundwater recharge or groundwater sustainability benefits. Applications must develop projects that provide groundwater benefits by converting irrigated ag land to less water-intensive use(s) and may provide additional benefits to community health, economic well-being, and wildlife habitat. Applications that design projects with measurable water savings and/or groundwater recharge elements will be prioritized.
The application period is open through June 26, 2026. Up to $200,000 per project is available for the finalization of project designs, plans, and permits that would result in a fully-planned and permitted project by September 30, 2027, which could be later be implementable through additional funding sources. Information on Implementation Projects
A public solicitation for project proposals for Implementation Projects was released on September 29, 2023. Up to $1,500,000 per project was available for project implementation costs that would result in a fully implemented project by the end of the grant term. See below for more information on the RFP and selected projects, which are currently going through permitting and preparation for implementation.
